September is National Rice Month. The typical American consumes an average of 26 pounds of rice per year. But in many other countries, rice is a staple that is eaten almost every day. No wonder. Rice is a healthy, economical food that can be used in a huge variety of ways. It’s healthy because it’s sodium and cholesterol-free and contains just a trace of fat. Rice, especially brown rice, contains many nutrients that are needed for good health.
Rice is great for cutting grocery costs. It can be combined with a variety of other foods to make delicious casseroles and side dishes. Since it is inexpensive, making dishes that contain rice is a very economical way to stretch your food dollars.
This year’s National Rice Month celebration includes the “Bowl Us Over” contest. You can log onto http://www.usarice.com/bowlusover and submit a Rice Bowl recipe for a chance to win prizes. If you’ve discovered a special combination of rice and other foods that you blend into a rice bowl, it could turn out to be the winning dish! Just describe in 25 words or less, how you transform rice into delicious, healthy, quick to prepare, and uniquely different rice bowl meals by simply adding a few of your favorite ingredients and flavors.
The first-place winner will receive $500 in free groceries at any store; second and third place will receive $250 and $150 in free groceries, respectively, and seven runners-ups will receive Aroma® rice cookers. Winning ideas will be published on the USA Rice Web site.
If you don’t win, why not check out our free grocery generation system. You can learn about it by watching the videos on the free grocery generation website.
